Né à Brooklyn, dans une famille juive originaire de Saint-Pétersbourg, Jacob Gershowitz, plus connu sous le nom de George Gershwin (1898-1937), fut une étoile filante dans la ciel de la composition musicale américaine. À la croisée de plusieurs influences – musiques klezmer et afro-américaine, musique moderne française –, cet ancien pianiste d'orchestre, ami de Ravel, de Berg, de Schönberg, fut un des plus grands compositeurs de chansons populaires et de partitions cinématographiques de son temps. Porgy and Bess, Rhapsody in Blue, Un Américain à Paris, etc., son œuvre multiple et novatrice, contemporaine de celle de Fitzgerald, fait résonner l'histoire de l'Amérique des années 1930, d'un nouveau monde en pleine expansion, de toute une génération – celle du jazz.
